Keep Sarasota Bay Healthy:
Enjoy Boating, Fishing, and Recreation in the Bay
In Cortez, fishing has been a way of life for over a century.
With fun and recreation comes responsibility. Here's what you can do to enjoy Bay-safe activities and protect the estuary at the same time:
Visit the F.I.S.H. Preserve in Cortez or other Florida wildlife areas to see nature in action and to learn more about these critical environmentsfirsthand.
Be aware of shallow seagrass beds and avoid anchoring or causing prop scars. Use this map to locate seagrass beds throughout Sarasota Bay’s intercoastal waterway, a critical estuary for the sustenance of sea life.
Keep the water of the Bay clean by not discharging fuel, chemicals, or waste into the water. Be sure to stay in marked, designated boating channels referenced by these guides.

Keeping Sarasota Bay Healthy signs found throughout the Village are a Cortez Village Historical Society project funded by the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, with additional support from the Florida Maritime Museum.
