A FISHING VILLAGE ON SARASOTA BAY

A vibrant array of life within the estuary sustains our way of life

The Village of Cortez is a "living museum"  where you can experience the  story of the Florida Gulf Coast fishery and the families that have fished here for generations. The Cortez Village Historical Society has installed signs throughout the village highlighting the importance of maintaining a healthy estuary—vital not only for marine life but also for the local economy. These signs remind residents and visitors  that our activities on land and in the water directly impact the estuary’s health. Each of us plays a part in protecting both the bay and the Village of Cortez, one of Florida’s few remaining traditional seafood-harvesting communities. By acting responsibly today, we help ensure that the bay’s rich natural resources remain stable and thriving for generations to come.
